THE City of uMhlathuze and the Zululand Multi Sport Club hosted yet another successful Fish Eagle Coast Mile Swim on Saturday at the club grounds.
Athletes from as far as Durban arrived to compete in one of our City’s major events on the swimming calendar while enjoying calm weather and flat seas.
The senior mile event had spectators on the edge of their seats while Mel Lawrence and Vinette Roux challenged each other neck-to-neck around the two-lap course.
Mel won it for the men in a time of 21 minutes and 18 seconds, closely followed by Vinette who did it for the women in 21 minutes and 27 seconds.
The City has, over the past four years, had a development programme running in the eSikhawini area.
The fruits of this programme were seen on Saturday as spectators witnessed 35 of these young swimmers finishing the mile course in fine style.
The Assistant Director of Junior Sport - Bheki Gumbe of the Provincial Department of Sport made mention that he was impressed to see so many swimmers of colour participating at this level.
With a good turnout of spectators and fantastic weather conditions, a great day’s racing was had by all.
