Thieves steal water meters
Cindy Crouse
THEFT of water meters and pipes has taken
place in the Empangeni area over the past
few weeks, with seven cases reported last
week and between 10 and 18 the previous
week.
According to uMhlathuze Deputy City Engineer
Richard Madden, the thieves operate between
1am and 4am, hacking away meters and pipes
and leaving litres of water gushing into the
streets.
These are sold to scrap metal dealers for a
fraction of the cost of the damage caused,
and the victims know nothing of their loss
until they try to turn their taps on in the
morning.
One suspect was apprehended trying to steal
from the municipal depot and it is hoped
that further arrests will follow.
