Tata Steel site begins

Ground clearing has started at the
site of Tata Steel’s R650-million plant in
Alton North

GROUND clearing for the R650-million Tata
Steel ferrochrome plant in Richards Bay has
started.
The official sod turning ceremony is
scheduled for 21 August at the Alton North
site.
CEO of Tata Steel South Africa Operations,
Somdeb Banerjee confirmed a list of
dignitaries who will attend the function.
They include Deputy Premier - Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka, KZN Premier - Sbusiso Ndebele,
MEC for Finance and Economic Development -
Dr Zweli Mkhize, MEC of Agriculture and
Environmental Affairs - Prof Gabriel
Ndabandaba and the Mayor of the City of
Umhlathuze - Ald Denny Moffatt.
Opportunities
‘After interviews with local businesses, we
aim to have an open forum where our
principal contractors, Metix, Pyromat,
Murray and Roberts and Peter Mellor, will
provide a breakdown of the jobs that will be
procured locally,’ said Thami Msubo, Chief:
Human Resources and Public Affairs of Tata
Steel SA Operation.
‘This meeting is still under discussions and
as soon as the date has been finalised we
will communicate through the media.
‘Local SMME’s will be invited by the
Zululand Chamber of Business and the Small
Enterprise Development Agency,’ said Msubo.
This meeting is scheduled to take place
immediately after the ground breaking
ceremony.
