ALL Richards Bay
industries have been told to
aim for 'serious emission
reductions' to allow for
future development.
Speaking at a poorly
attended Ward 3 (Arboretum)
meeting last week, Fred
Phillips - City Director of
Community Services and
Health, said industry had
taken up the challenge and
would be closely monitored
by local government.
‘We have come a long way
since the late 1980's when
Richards Bay was labelled
'the Bay of pigs', said
Phillips.
'The initial efforts of a
few companies to monitor
carbon dioxide grew to the
formation of the Richards
Bay Clean Air Association (RBCAA),
a partnership between
community pollution
watchdogs, industry and the
municipality.
Phillips said the RBCAA was
highly regarded nationally
for its work in pollution
monitoring and air quality
prediction.
He said plans for 'sulphur
dioxide trading' between
industries were in the
initial discussion phase.
