RICHARDS Bay Wrestling Club is producing
top athletes who are competing successfully
at provincial and national level.
The club has also produced the new SA
champion, Klein Jan Combrinck.
In the Natal League, wrestlers compete in
tournaments throughout the year, collecting
points to see who can claim the title at the
end of the season.
Klein Jan Combrinck is the defending champ
and is well on his way to retaining his
title when the season concludes on 4
November.
Klein Jan, although not a cadet (15-18
years), was invited, together with the SA
Cadet Group, to Egypt to train with their
national squad.
He was the only wrestler from Zululand to be
included in the trip. The SA squad stayed in
the Olympic Village for two weeks and won an
impressive 40 per cent of their bouts.
The 11 year-old wrestler’s next overseas
trip will see him winging his way to Germany
as part of the SA squad.
Klein Jan received his SA colours after
defeating the five time SA champ in the
President’s League in June.
According to wrestling rules fighters in the
same weight division fall in the same
bracket regardless of age.
So it was that the 11 year-old Zululander,
grouped in the 27-30kg category, came to
defeat the 15 year-old SA champ.
So chuffed was the little fighter, according
to dad Jan he ‘slept in his SA colours track
suit and refused to take it off for two
weeks’.
