THE cheers and ululations
of the thousands of women
who attended Womens’ Day
celebrations at the Mbonambi
Primary school last week
were heard three kilometres
away.
This after KZN MEC for
Public Works, Blessed Gwala
announced his department’s
latest multi-million rand
empowering measures for
local women.
Addressing a record crowd of
about thee thousand women
who attended the Municipal
Women’s Day event, Minister
Gwala said women had taken
huge strides since the
historic anti-pass marches
in 1956.
Maintenance
‘But half of our community
is still plagued by domestic
violence, HIV Aids, rape and
abuse.
‘This must stop. Women must
mobilize to expose rapists
and the cowardly
perpetrators of domestic
violence.
‘Fathers who deny their
maintenance payments must
also be brought to book,’
said Gwala, promising full
government assistance to
stop these evils and amid
loud cheers.
Centres
‘My department is not just
talking about evils and
abuses.
‘I have decided that more
than R3-million is to be
spent here in KwaMbonambi to
empower the NGO Ikusasalethu
(Our Future).
‘This 4 000 strong women's
movement, which now works
from premises all over the
Zululand region, I feel must
be properly accommodated in
proper administrative
centres,’ said Gwala.
The minister said that
multi-purpose centres
scheduled for areas outside
of Kwambo will empower women
construction companies in
the very first place.
