Twist in Mayor saga
Dave Savides
IN a surprise move that will have severe
impact on the balance of power in four
municipalities, including the City of
uMhlathuze, Nadeco has withdrawn its support
of the ANC in favour of the IFP.
Nadeco President, Ziba Jiyane told the
Zululand Observer on Sunday that his members
were unhappy with the ‘disrespect and poor
treatment’ shown them by the ANC.
Nadeco had entered an arrangement with the
ANC before the last national elections and
promises made were not honoured, he said.
‘Before I could terminate the agreement with
the ANC I had to first enter a new agreement
with the IFP, at national level.
‘I stated categorically at the time (of
partnering with the ANC) that conscience
would always dictate in my decisions.
‘While we will co-operate with others, at
all times we will retain our independence
and assess our political options.’
Status quo
Jiyane said Dr Buthelezi was ‘elated’ at
Nadeco’s stance.
‘We realise that we have far more in common
with the IFP as both believe in a Christian
Democracy.
‘The IFP now accepts us a politcal party,
and a friendly one at that.’
While the two Nadeco votes will be crucial
in Thursday’s uMhlathuze City Exco showdown,
Jiyane said he was presently ‘happy with the
status quo’ but that councillors would be
instructed during the week.
He said Nadeco would not only like to see
Ald Denny Moffatt retained as Mayor, but
would also want Dr Tonie Heyneke retained as
City CEO.
