DESPITE the blustery conditions, the
standard of bowls on view at Empangeni
Country Club for the play-offs of the KZN
Men’s and Women’s Senior Singles was well
worth watching.
Representatives from Midlands, Northerns and
Zululand again pitted their skills against
each other on the excellent greens provided.
After completion of three rounds played on
Saturday, the women’s section was headed by
Rina Lloyd (Northerns) on four plus 15,
closely followed by Tish Cresswell-George
(Zululand) on four plus 11 and Ria Mapp
(Midlands) on four plus five.
Leading the men was Jannie Campbell
(Midlands) on six plus 14 while his closest
rival was Steffan Dahlmann (Zululand) on
four plus seven.
Sunday
Cresswell-George took over the lead in the
women’s section with a huge 21-9 victory
over Mapp while her two nearest rivals both
suffered defeats.
In the final round, Cresswell-George had a
close 21-18 win over Lloyd, thereby
recording her fourth victory of the
tournament and, with a final score of eight
plus 26, the championship was her’s.
The runner-up spot was filled by Yvonne du
Plessis (Northerns) on six plus four and
third went to Ria Mapp (Midlands) on six
minus one.
Both Campbell and Dahlmann continued on
their winning ways in the men’s section with
victories of 21-13 and 21-10 over Peter
Garbutt (Zululand) and Koos Smit (Northerns)
respectively.
With Campbell and Dahlmann due to meet in
the final round an exciting climax was set.
Unfortunately this was not to be, as
Campbell struggled in the windy conditions
and with Dahlmann adjusting to the elements,
he ran out a comfortable winner by 21 shots
to 10, making it a clean sweep for Zululand.
Campbell finished as runner-up and in third
spot was yet another Zululander, Peter
Garbutt.
