New ships for old

At last there is news of a positive nature on the planned Ship Repair Facility (SRF) in the Richards Bay Harbour. The initial announcement of the R2-billion SRF was made in February 2004 and while everything is going according to plan, the process has taken much longer than one would have hoped.
The consortium which will build the facility is in place and all of Richards Bay is looking forward to welcoming that contingent, which includes Chinese shipbuilding expertise. This type of slowness in processing all the necessities required by the laws and regulations which relate particularly to matters of the environment, was what the Deputy State President was referring to when she opened the Tata Steel smelter.
When public servants with the attitude that they’re just doing an ordinary clerical job, like processing a form, hold up job-creating projects, it is a matter of grave concern.
The new SRF is planned to handle about 40 vessels per year, which will generate revenue of about R300-million. The full potential of the Richards Bay Harbour continues to unfold and the industrial skyline constantly shifts, while more jobs are created and more ships put in for refurbishing, bringing with them heavy injections of welcome euros, dollars, pounds and other currencies.

Nuwe produkte
